Finding the right car shipping companies can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. The market is crowded, and every provider promises the lowest price, fastest service, and best care. But how do you cut through the noise to find a reliable partner you can truly trust with your vehicle?

This page isn’t just about selling our service; it’s a comprehensive guide designed to equip you with the knowledge to evaluate the entire industry. By focusing on the essential questions and red flags, you’ll be ready to choose a company that delivers peace of mind, not just a low quote.

The 5 Critical Questions to Ask Every Car Shipping Company

1. Are You a Broker or a Carrier?

This is the most important distinction in auto transport.

  • A Carrier owns the trucks and employs the drivers. They handle the physical movement of your vehicle.

  • A Broker (like Payless Auto Shipping Services) acts as a highly specialized travel agent. We connect your specific vehicle and route to a vast network of fully vetted carriers across the nation.

Why it Matters: A carrier may offer a lower initial price but can only service their limited routes. A broker offers flexibility, speed, and competitive pricing by tapping into thousands of options, ensuring your car moves quickly, even on less common routes.

2. How Transparent Is Your Pricing?

The lowest quote is often not the final price. Many companies use incredibly low “bait” quotes, only to drastically raise the price later because they couldn’t find a driver willing to take the load at that initial rate.

What to Demand: Insist on an all-inclusive, guaranteed quote. Ask if the quote is a direct reflection of current market pricing and if any part of the payment is non-refundable.

3. What is Your Insurance Coverage?

Every licensed car shipping company must carry insurance, but the coverage details vary wildly.

  • Look for: A minimum of $100,000 to $250,000 in cargo insurance (which covers your car if damaged during transit) and liability insurance.

  • The Fine Print: Ask specifically about deductibles. Reputable companies provide zero-deductible coverage, meaning you pay nothing if damage occurs while the vehicle is on the trailer.

4. What is Your Communication and Tracking System?

When your car is on the road, you shouldn’t have to wonder where it is. Good auto transport companies provide proactive communication.

  • Expect: Direct contact from the driver 24 hours before pickup and delivery. You should also have access to a dispatch team or customer support to answer questions during transit.

  • Red Flag: Companies that are impossible to reach or only communicate via generic emails should be avoided.

5. What Do Third-Party Review Sites Say?

Don’t just rely on the testimonials posted on a company’s own site. Check independent sources.

  • Where to Check: Look at review volumes and scores on the Better Business Bureau (BBB), Google, and transportation-specific sites like Transport Reviews. A high volume of recent, positive reviews is a clear indicator of consistent service quality.

The Three Types of Car Shipping Companies in the Market

The Small, Independent Carrier

These are the truckers who own 1-5 trailers. They offer personalized service but have limited routes, making them a poor choice for cross-country car shipping. If they break down or change their route, you have limited recourse.

The Large National Broker

These companies have massive advertising budgets and networks. They offer convenience but often lack the personalized customer service and might prioritize their most profitable routes first, potentially leaving your vehicle waiting longer.

The Dedicated Service Broker

This model combines the best of both worlds. We leverage a vast, vetted network (like a large broker) but operate with a dedicated customer support team and proprietary technology. This means you get the competitive pricing and flexibility of a broker, combined with the personal accountability and communication of a smaller service.
