“How much does it cost to ship a car?”

Whether you’re relocating to a new state, purchasing a vehicle online, moving for a new job, or shipping a seasonal or classic car, understanding car shipping costs is essential for proper planning and budgeting. This guide explains everything you need to know about car shipping costs, the factors that influence pricing, and how to secure the best rate without sacrificing reliability or service quality.

What Is the Average Cost to Ship a Car?

On average, car shipping costs in the United States typically range between $500 and $1,500, depending on several factors. Short-distance shipments are generally more affordable, while long-distance or cross-country transport costs more overall but may offer better per-mile pricing.

It’s important to remember that no two shipments are exactly alike. Vehicle size, distance, timing, and transport method all play a role in determining your final car shipping rate. Because of these variables, the most accurate way to know your cost is by requesting a personalized quote.

Key Factors That Affect the Cost to Ship a Car

Understanding what goes into your quote helps you make informed decisions and avoid surprises.

Real-time tracking
Distance of Transport

Distance is one of the most significant pricing factors. Longer routes increase fuel usage, driver time, and logistics coordination. However, longer shipments often benefit from lower cost per mile, making cross-country shipping more economical than expected.

Vehicle Size, Weight, and Type

The make and model of your vehicle directly affect pricing. Compact cars and sedans are the least expensive to ship SUVs, trucks, and vans cost more due to size and weight Oversized or modified vehicles may require special accommodations Heavier and larger vehicles take up more space on a carrier, which impacts the overall transport cost.

Open & Enclosed Transport Options
Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport

Open Auto Transport Most common and cost-effective option Vehicles are transported on open carriers Ideal for standard daily drivers Enclosed Auto Transport Provides maximum protection from weather and road debris Recommended for luxury, exotic, classic, or collectible cars Costs more due to limited capacity and premium handling Your choice between open and enclosed transport significantly influences your final price.

Pickup and Delivery Locations

Shipping to or from major metropolitan areas is usually more affordable due to higher carrier availability and frequent routes. Rural or remote locations may increase costs slightly because they require additional travel or coordination.

Time of Year and Seasonal Demand

Auto transport pricing fluctuates throughout the year. Peak season (summer & holidays): Higher demand, higher prices Off-season (fall & winter): Lower demand, better rates Planning ahead and being flexible with pickup dates can help reduce your shipping cost.
